Irrigation potential in the Peace region

These resources document the results of a 2016 irrigation feasibility study for the Peace region.

The study looked at the potential for irrigation scenarios using six case studies, including:

  • Single farm systems
  • Small community systems
  • Large irrigation systems with different water sources and water storage capacity

Results showed that irrigated agriculture in the Peace is only feasible under very specific conditions. This was based on water demand models for three reference crops, projected water supply, a detailed economic analysis and current market conditions.

Climate change will increase the feasibility of irrigation in the region, but changing economics and/or cropping systems will influence broader feasibility.

A set of three related fact sheets highlight producer considerations for supplemental irrigation.
