Managing extreme heat for dairy, poultry and berries

This report summarizes findings of a scan that reviewed practices and technologies for managing extreme heat in the dairy, poultry and berry sectors in the Fraser Valley.

It also outlines recommendations for additional actions/research for each commodity.

Some of the practices and technologies considered were:

  • Poultry/dairy: enhancing the use of data about humidity levels in barns to assess heat stress, for example, using heat stress apps
  • Dairy: increasing the use of evaporative cooling and/or radiant barrier technologies in barns
  • Berries: using reflective tarps or small-scale cooling systems to minimize post-harvest heat damage
